Director of Ambassadors

Arethia Cowden

GLORY GLORY GLORY!!! God is truly good. I’m so Blessed to be the Director of Ambassadors for Women of Significance. To be chosen to be a leader in such a wonderful organization is more than a role it’s a duty that I will do my very best to up hold to the standards that this fine organization is built upon. A leadership is “the action of leading a group of people or an organization”. It will be a challenge as Director of Ambassadors because of the different personalities that I will have to work with. That is something that I will not run from but will embrace. God sees something in me so who am I to question? I have lead in the past working with women who had low self-esteem issues at one of my local Recreation Centers. I talked with the women and not at them. I think being able to express yourself in a way that is not intimidating is the best way to be. To be able to speak in a way that is loving and leading by example is best. I will lead with Excellence if I make any mistakes please do not hold it against me. Thank you Roberta Michelle Cykon for seeing something in me that lead to your decision to be in a leadership position. I want to reach as many women as I can with empowering them to love the skin that they are in. God can work through anyone and being to take that message to the world is a goal I have. Be your own kind of beautiful not what society says we should be. “I AM BEAUTY” I say this to myself on a daily bases and I challenge you to do the same.

A little about myself; I was born to Freddie and Jo Grisby September 10,1967 and I live in Wichita Kansas. I am a plus size woman who has the confidence to feel great in my own skin. I am a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister, friend and Business owner. I am the owner of SISTA BIG BONES CATERING. I have been in business since 2007 I am a down-home cook. I did not go to some fancy cooking school; my mom taught me. I remember sitting on the counter tops mixing bowls of homemade cake mixes, cornbread and just listening to mama tell me how to make dishes that made daddy know he was loved; which was everything mama cooked. I thought I was in the way but mama did not mind me watching and helping her stir things. I retained many of my cooking lessons and whenever I forget something, I call mama right today and ask her. I think my style is down-home cooking because that is what I was raised up on. Going out for fast food in our house was only on report card day or when mama wanted a break. It comes very natural to me to whip up a recipe and have dinner ready for my family. Starting a catering business was a no brainier. One day my business is going be known all over the United States and then some. My Faith is not a local Faith it has no boundaries. I have been involved in Plus Size Pageantry since 2003; the titles I held/hold are something that I hold very dear to my heart. Plus Size Pageantry is where size does not matter because the women competing are all plus size and I can be myself. I am so happy to be able to highlight my many talents such as singing, praise dancing and monologues.

On August 22,2010 I suffered not one not two but THREE heart attacks while that was going on I suffered not one not two but THREE strokes. Now here I was lying in the hospital near death. My brain was so swollen that the doctors where afraid to give me surgery to relieve the pressure. I could hear the doctors talking to my husband but I could not respond. I wanted to speak but I just couldn’t open up my mouth. All I knew to do was pray with my mind and my husband had called in the prayer warriors from our church. It took thirty days before I could have surgery to remove the pressure from my brain. September 22,2010 I had surgery. GOD o yes but GOD said death was not in his plan for my life. He reached into my hospital bed and touched my body. ONLY GOD COULD DO IT. I have scars from surgery but that is my badge that proves that I was in a battle and that I won. My speech, was slurred for about a month after surgery but let me tell you I am healed I have been made whole. I am still a little weak on my left side but other than that, I am whole. Thank you Mighty God for saving my life.
